Ann Nuboko Happold was born on August 3, 1935 to Carl and Katsu Oya in Ewa, Hawaii. She grew up with two sisters (Mary and Jane) along with three brothers (Donald, Ronald, and Edwin). Her family lived on a sugar plantation and she attended Ewa Grade School. When Ann was just 6 years old, Ann and her family witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After graduating from Waipahu High School in 1953, she attended nursing school in a local Catholic hospital. Ann held multiple jobs that included working for the Navy photo lab and Long’s Drug Store.
In October of 1956, she met Frank Happold on a blind date and later married on February 16, 1957. They were married for 64 years. Since Frank was enlisted in the Navy, they lived in many different places such as France, Pennsylvania, and San Diego. Frank retired from the Navy in 1974 and the family moved to Oregon. They soon bought their home in Sandy where they raised their family. Ann worked as a receptionist for a legal firm in Gresham and retired when she was 65 years of age. After retiring, Ann enjoyed walking with friends, gardening, sewing, cooking, traveling, caring for her orchids, and spending time with her grandchildren. One of Ann’s favorite activities after retirement was spending time in her blueberry farm. There, she taught her grandchildren, and many others, all about the different types of blueberries and how to pick just the right one. Ann was also active with the Sandy Kiwanis Club along with her church community at St. John’s Church.
Ann is survived by her husband, Frank, her children Duane Happold (wife Liz), Lisa Trimble (husband Craig) and Ryan Happold. Ann has 10 grandchildren: Andrew, Daniel, Christopher (wife Savannah), Reed, Austin, Lily, Ian, Rylynn, McKenzie, and RJ. Ann is also survived by her 3 great grandchildren: Mikah, Sofia, and Alexander.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Michael’s Church in Sandy, OR on November 4, 2021 at 11:00 am with a reception following at the Mt. View Golf Course in Boring, OR. An internment service will be held on November 8, 2021 at Willamette National Cemetery for family.
