Calvin Gilbert Jones, 85, of Sandy passed away at Whitewood Gardens Residential Care after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. Cal, known to people in his youth as Gilbert, was born April 30, 1932 in Sandy to Calvin and Bertha Jones, in the house his father built east of Sandy on Hwy. 26. The eighth child in the family, he was predeceased by his two older brothers and four of his five sisters. He attended Sandy Elementary and High School before moving to Cocolalla, ID in 1948. He graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1950. Cal returned to Sandy in 1951, where he met Sheila Ann Chase, the love of his life. They were married on December 6, 1952. Cal was inducted into the Army in February 1953 and spent time in Japan and the Vancouver barracks. After the Army, he was hired by Portland Fire in 1955; his son remembers a Battalion Chief telling him Cal was always smiling when he was on the job; Cal loved being a firefighter and helping people. He also loved flying and had a private pilot’s license. He worked on his days off as a framer, building his own home in Sandy in 1962. He drove a school bus and served as a school board member and Sandy City Council member. After retiring in January of 1984, Cal and Sheila spent time in Honolulu with friends Cliff and Donna Junker. In 2007 Cal and Sheila bought a winter home in Pahrump, NV where they spent several winters before Cal became too ill to travel. He was preceded in death by his daughter Julie in 2010. Cal leaves behind his beloved wife, Sheila; his son, Doug Jones (Holly) of Sandy; his grandson, Brian Jones (Karley) of McMinnville; his granddaughter, Laurel Pawlowski (Robert) of Cedar Mill; one great-grandson, Benjamin, of McMinnville, and his sister, Lois Haines of Newport, and many nieces and nephews.
