Sandy resident Carol Ryan passed away Saturday April 4th, 2015. She was 93.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Sandy Baptist Church.
Carol Elizabeth Hughes was born July 17, 1921 in Trinidad, Colorado to Marie A. (Kaleser) and William B. Hughes. The family lived in Aguilar, Colorado, a small, very historic mining town where William was the school superintendent and Marie taught at the elementary level for 43 years. Many different languages were spoken in this very lively immigrant town. As an adult, Carol often remarked how fortunate she was to spend her childhood in such an interesting atmosphere with hills to explore and nearby mountains to climb.
Following her high school graduation Carol enjoyed her college days at Colorado Woman’s College in Denver where her main interests were English and Journalism. However, with America on the brink of participation in World War II, she entered a nursing program that sought to train women nurses to become part of the military. Upon graduation, Carol became a United States Navy Nurse serving in the Pacific Ocean area during the war.
After returning to civilian life, Carol married Joseph Ryan. They established their home in Colorado and had two daughters, Cynthia and Peggy.
Years later when Peggy was living in Sandy she asked Carol, who had retired as Director of Nursing at Rose Medical Center in Denver CO, to join her in Sandy. Carol moved into Peggy’s home and has lived in Sandy for the last 10 years.
Carol’s husband and both daughters preceded her in death.
Contributions may be made to Sandy Senior Center.
