Obituary

Cecil Walter DeMary II September 2, 1949-July 1, 2024, Cecil Walter DeMary II, known to many as Walt, passed away on July 1, 2024, peacefully at the age of 74 at his home in Sandy, Oregon.

Born on September 2, 1949, in Portland, Oregon, Walt was the beloved son of Cecil Walter DeMary and Dorothy Mae DeMary Bradshaw. At the young age of 16, Walt began his career at Pendleton Woolen Mills working with his father, where he worked as a finishing tender. His dedication and work ethic were evident early on, and he carried these qualities throughout his life. Walt was drafted into the United States Army, where he received training as a dog handler with the 39th Infantry Platoon from February 9, 1970, to May 1, 1970. He was assigned a trusted United States Army dog named Alf, who served and protected in-front of the platoon with Walt seeking booby traps and navigated them through the jungle. He proudly served his country with the 39th Infantry Platoon Scout Dog Handler 173rd Airborne Brigade. By direction of the president Walt was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He received the Commendation Medal for Meritorious Achievement in the Republic of Vietnam. He earned the Infantry Queen of Battle and the Combat Infantryman Badge as a member of the renowned Fighting Fourth Infantry Division in the Central Highlands of the Republic of Vietnam. Walt was placed on standby reserve from June 25, 1974, to June 1, 1975, and received notice of his relief from standby reserve on May 20, 1975.

After separating from Vivian Ann DeMary Wolf, Walt became a devoted single father to his children, Heather and Samuel DeMary. Walt cherished spending most of his time outside fishing, hunting, mushroom picking, shooting and camping throughout Oregon’s beautiful mountains, rivers and lakes. He also was a very talented artist who could make a masterpiece out of anything such as glass, ceramics, and wood. If he was not outdoors or crafting something up, he was enjoying a game of pool or cards with his friends and family.

Walt is survived by his daughter, Heather Demary and his son Samuel DeMary. He is also survived by his siblings: Babe Dodson, Diane Brines, Edith Karlin, Lynn Caswell, Cindy Julien and Robin Richardson. He leaves behind two granddaughters, Halona and Avery DeMary. Walt was predeceased by his father and mother, his brother Randy DeMary and his sister Jan Wamboldt.

Walt’s legacy of service, hard work, and love for his family and country will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
