Walt was drafted into the United States Army, where he received training as a dog handler with the 39th Infantry Platoon from February 9, 1970, to May 1, 1970. He was assigned a trusted United States Army dog named Alf, who served and protected in-front of the platoon with Walt seeking booby traps and navigated them through the jungle. He proudly served his country with the 39th Infantry Platoon Scout Dog Handler 173rd Airborne Brigade. By direction of the president Walt was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. After separating from Vivian Ann DeMary Wolf, Walt became a devoted single father to his children, Heather and Samuel DeMary. Walt cherished spending most of his time outside fishing, hunting, mushroom picking, shooting and camping throughout Oregon’s beautiful mountains, rivers and lakes. He also was a very talented artist who could make a masterpiece out of anything such as glass, ceramics, and wood. If he was not outdoors or crafting something up, he was enjoying a game of pool or cards with his friends and family.
