West Linn resident Dale Sleeman died due to complications of ALS at Providence Medical Center Portland on April 18, 2011. He was 75.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 28th at 3:00 p.m. at Damascus Pioneer Cemetery in Damascus.
He was born Dale Allen Sleeman on September 24, 1935 to Bertram Clarence and Cecile Grey (Simmons) Sleeman in Butte, Montana. The family moved to Oregon when Dale was about 7 years old, eventually settling in Lake Oswego. He received his elementary schooling in West Linn. Dale attended 2 years at West Linn High School where he was on the swim team. He attended his final two years at Lake Oswego High School where he was on the track and field team specializing in shot put. He graduated in1953.
After graduation Dale attended Portland Art institute for a short time where he fine-tuned his drawing skills. He also joined the Army Reserve, serving for 6 years, ultimately ranking up to Staff Sergeant.
On January 17, 1959 he married Beverly Buckner in Vancouver, WA. They settled in West Linn and began their family. By then Dale was working for the family businesses; Oswego Asphalt and Pavers, and Sleeman Enterprises. In the mid 1970’s he purchased the Baskin Robbins Ice Cream store on 42nd and Powell and then later sold that one and purchased the Baskin Robbins in Gladstone. He worked a total of 35 years in the Ice Cream business before retiring in 2010.
Dale was a member of the Berean Christadelphian Church and he enjoyed studying the Bible. He was also a very gifted artist and loved doing portraits in chalk.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years Beverly; daughters, Linda Riley of Oregon City , Lori Vanderberg of Damascus, and 4 grandchildren.
