In Loving Memory Of

David Michael "Mickey" Garner

July 18th, 1947 - November 20th, 2021

Obituary

David Michael Garner was born on July 18, 1947, to Dave and Beverly (Lloyd) Garner in Lodi, California. He passed away in his home Saturday, November 20, 2021.

"Mickey" was raised in the California Bay Area, where he attended Homestead High School and De Anza Jr. College, where he met his future wife. In 1971, he started his own successful sign painting business, where he taught himself gold-leaf lettering, and hand-painted large commercial business signs, race cars, boats, and more.

On June 24, 1972, Mickey married Nancy Adams in Cupertino, California. In 1977, he moved his family to Gladstone, Oregon. Mickey worked with some sign companies in Portland, and then moved into sandblasting and marine painting at the Swan Island Shipyards in the early 1980's. Mickey retired from the Painters Union in 2009 and did home remodeling work for several years afterward.

Mickey loved anything with an engine. He and his older brother held the quarter mile record for a while at the Fremont Dragstrip in Fremont, California. He has had several restoration projects such as Ford Model A cars, 1957 Ford Tractor and others. Mickey loved the water! He refurbished and learned to sail his 21' sailboat, then completely remodeled his 30’ Catalina sailboat. He sailed the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, the ocean and along the Oregon Coast.

Mickey was a perfectionist in remodeling his home, inside and outside. He loved working with wood using his chainsaw mill to cut cedar planks for a log cabin look in his family room and cutting board and batten siding for the entire outside of his home.

Mickey had a passion for traveling and was able to visit the UK, Paris, Barcelona, Israel and made 3-4 trips to Uganda, Africa.

Mickey is survived by his wife Nancy (Milwaukie), daughter Julie (Portland), son David (Dayton, OH.), daughter-in-law Melissa, grandchildren Charity, Haley, Jenna, Brianna, Nathan and Levi (Dayton, OH.), brother Garland Garner (Gridley, CA.)

Mickey and Nancy were attending Calvary Chapel Southeast in Milwaukie, Oregon.

Over the last fifteen years we have gotten to know Nancy as a diligent, loving and warm co-worker. I can't even begin to imagine how much Mickey will be missed.

Our sympathies to Nancy, David and Julie and the rest of the family.

Mickey was a good friend and neighbor for many years. He was always ready to lend a hand, if needed. As I got to know him, I grew to appreciate his outlook on life: he genuinely strove to be a better person. It showed. He spoke often of how proud he was of his son David and daughter Julie.

He was a man who made the most use of his time: He was always doing something; working on his vehicles, boats, home, yard and many other hobbies and pursuits, including inventions and mission work, or helping out a neighbor. He very rarely had an idle moment. He had an engineers mind and could make anything, or so it seemed. There never seemed to be a challenge he could not overcome.

Even during his battle with cancer, he was helping his friends and neighbors, right to the end. And though he was often in a great deal of pain, he always had a friendly word and a wave.

Mickey was a good friend to many and a man of strong faith.
His passing will leave a big hole in many peoples lives, including ours. Rest in Peace, my friend.
