Longtime Sandy resident Dean Schneider passed away at Mt. Hood Legacy Hospital February 25, 2018 surrounded by loving family members. He was 91 years old.
He and his wife Toots were a town fixture, seen walking on their daily post office run. Toots passed away in August 2016 just after celebrating their 66th wedding anniversary. Though lonely, Dad was a trooper and remained independent and in the home they shared until about a week before his passing.
After Dean graduated from high school he served in the Navy and was commissioned to a supply ship that delivered food to dozens of ships in the Philippines during World War II. After his discharge from the Navy he worked at a local sawmill. Dean went on to use his education funding to go to mechanic school in Portland Oregon. Soon after finishing his schooling he worked for Sandy School District for 6 years driving and maintaining the buses. From there he worked in town as an auto mechanic for 10 years at Richardson Chevrolet. He finished out his working career assembling large equipment at Wagner Mining where he retired after 20+ years.
Dean was a quiet, humble man with a wry sense of humor who lived life his way.
He loved golf, chopping wood and riding his motorcycle, he rode it to work as often as weather permitted. He was also a real “Mr. Fixit”, just give him a couple of tools and there wasn’t much he couldn’t repair. After retirement he kept busy delivering meals on wheels.
He is survived by his children Phil Schneider (Holly), Debbie Flippen (Dave) and Julie Ryan (Mike). His wife Lucile “Toots”, daughter Jan Sordello, son-in-law Robert Sordello and grandson Matt preceded him in death. He also leaves behind twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by us all.
