Obituary

Former Sandy resident, Delton Cansler Sr. died suddenly on Saturday, January 23, 2010 in Yuma, Arizona. He was 72.

A Funeral Service will be held in the chapel of Sandy Funeral Home on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Cliffside Cemetery. A Celebration of Life was held in Yuma on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 where 96 of his friends along with his family remembered his life.

Delton Lee Cansler Sr. was born on February 16, 1937 in Kansas City, Kansas to Bertrum and Elmina (Bechtle) Cansler. As a young boy, the family moved to Oregon, making their home in Sandy where Delton was raised and received his elementary education at Kelso Grade School and Sandy High School. In 1957, he married Sharon Cunningham and they had 4 children together. They lived in The Dalles and Sandy where Delton was employed at Harvey’s Aluminum Plant in The Dalles and later at Reynold’s Aluminum Plant. Sharon and Delton were later divorced.

On January 29, 1977, he was united in marriage to Loretta Gokey in Boring. They made their home in Sandy where Delton pursued his career at Reynold’s Aluminum Plant until retiring in 1992. Shortly after retiring, Delton and Loretta moved to Wamic, but spent the last 17 years wintering in Yuma, Arizona.

Delton will be remembered by his family as a simple man who enjoyed life. Delton considered himself a “jack of all trades”, but a “king of none”. He loved playing poker, slot machines, bingo and going to the Casinos. His family and friends were of great importance to him and he always encouraged family get-togethers. He enjoyed the many months that he and his wife spent in Yuma enjoying the sunshine.

Surviving is his wife Loretta; his son Del Cansler Jr. of Dover; his daughters Debbie Hood of Gaston and Denise Boswell of Sisters; his brothers, Wayne Cansler of Sandy, Art Cansler of Arlington, Washington, Clyde Cansler of Sandy and Tom Cansler of Sandy; his sister Joy Mason of Sandy; 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren with a baby on the way. He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and his son.
