Obituary

Sandy resident, lover of hunting and fishing and a long-time Hoodland Lions Club volunteer and supporter, Don Budd, 87, died Monday, December 30, 2019. Don was born to Roy (Baker, OR) and Doris Budd (South Dakota) on April 7, 1932 in Big Timber Montana, where he later attended grade school with brothers Joe, Norbert (Red) and sister Shirley (Bacon) and high school in Anaconda. Don also worked as a cowboy on a ranch with his father, Roy, and learned to hunt and fish with his brother, Joe.

In 1950, Don married a Montana native, Molly Ann Harding and they had four children, Curtis, Lucy, Laura, and Tim Budd and Don built an amazing log cabin for his family outside of Anaconda. During the years of raising their children, he actively fished and hunted, as well as working long hours in the smelter.

In 1968, Don and Molly moved to Oregon, where Don worked in the timber business during the summer months and with the ODOT (Oregon Department of Transportation) during the winter months. He soon became a full-time employee and finally a foreman overseeing and serving many teams.

After losing his wife Molly and daughter Laura in a tragic fire, the family relocated in Hoodland. Don met and married Tekla Jo Anne Henningsen and the two added Tekla’s children, Paul and Paige Daugherty, to make it a family of seven in August of 1969. Both Don and Tekla enjoyed serving with the Lions club and they became very active in the Mountain Players, as they participated in many productions during their 25 years together. Don would lose Tekla, as well, although they struggled together to beat her cancer, and Don would lose their son Tim, too, during the length of their marriage.

In August, 2005, Don married another Hoodland resident, Mona (Budd) and the two have enjoyed fourteen years of marriage with friendships on the mountain, frequent trips to visit family and grandchildren, following and supporting Cowboy poetry and art, multiple trips to Alaska and very actively pursuing their love for antiquing with family and friends.

Survivors include Don’s wife, Mona, of Sandy; sons Curtis Budd of Welches, Paul Daugherty of Portland, Gary Wescott of Tacoma and Kent McKeane of Estacada; daughters Lucy (Budd) Nowacki of Albany, Veronica McKeane of Estacada, Susan Daugherty of Portland and Paige Wescott of Tacoma and eleven grandchildren.

Sandy Funeral Home will be handling all arrangements. No public memorial will take place.
