Troutdale resident, Dorothy Spier, died suddenly at her home on December 31, 2008. She was 64.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, on Saturday January 10, 2009 at Sanctuary Church, formerly Gresham Free Methodist Church, 3101 SE Orient Drive, Gresham.
She was born, Dorothy Delphene Porter on March 20, 1944 in The Dalles, Oregon to Henry and Zelda (Utterback) Porter. She began her schooling in Hood River. The family later moved to Corvallis and then to Eugene where she graduated from South Eugene High School. Dorothy then furthered her education and attended Northwest Christian College in Eugene. In 1963, Dorothy moved to Portland where she met her future husband, Bob. They were united in marriage on September 28, 1963 in Hood River at the Valley Christian Church. They made their home in Portland and she began her career as an Administrative Assistant. She worked various positions in the healthcare industry for over 20 years, living in both the Gresham and Troutdale areas. In 1996, Dorothy left the healthcare industry to follow her passion in working with youth. She went to work at the Springdale Job Corp. where she worked as an Administrative Assistant and as a mentor to students until retiring in 2006.
Dorothy was an avid rubber stamp collector and card designer. She loved spending time on the Oregon Coast and walking on the beach. She also enjoyed traveling the world. She was a member of Cornerstone Christian Church and in past years, enjoyed teaching Sunday school and working with children.
Surviving is her husband Bob of Troutdale; her daughter, Cyndi Strandberg of Damascus; her son Michael of Manila, Philippines; her sisters, Olive Mae Stockwell of Gresham and Jennie Hill of Ontario, Oregon. She is preceded in death by her parents.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Action International, Street Children’s Ministry, P.O. Box398, Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043-0398, a charity inspired by her many travels to the Phillipines.
