Dorothy Ella Fairbanks, age 104 was called to Heaven on September 2, 2014. The “get-around grandma” has been actively seen around the Sandy, Oregon community for the past 23 years, although she still carried her deep Maine accent with her. Born in Rangeley, Maine, she spent the first 81 years of her life there as a school teacher, governess, war time factory worker, wife and mother. Dorothy spent all of her life staying active through friendships, reading, painting, embroidery, crocheting and knitting. Dorothy was always a teacher at heart and loved books. She spent much of her time volunteering at Kelso Elementary school reading to the 1st graders. Her positive attitude toward life in times of hardship and joy amazed most people she met. Her quick witted sense of humor made people laugh wherever she went. Most notably, in the last few years, this centurion has celebrated her birthdays with two thrilling hot air balloon rides and two daring motorcycle rides.
Dorothy is predeceased by her husband, Hayden Fairbanks, daughter, Martha Normand and son-in-law Eugene Normand. She is survived by her grandson Christian Normand, his wife Kimberly and her two great grandchildren, Hayden and Rosalie. A memorial will be held at Sandy Funeral Home on September 20th at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, please send your donations to Kelso Elementary School-care of the Kelso Community Club.
