Longtime Brightwood resident Dovie Williams, 95, with her family by her side, left the earth to be with the angels on March 5, 2012.
A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 10 at Sandy Funeral Home.
Burial was at Pleasant View Cemetery in Sherwood.
Dovie Marie was born December 15, 1916 in Delaware County, Oklahoma to Robert and Mary (Welch) Livingston. She spent most of her young years living with her family on the prairie. She learned to work the land and helped to take care of her siblings.
On November 29, 1934 Dovie was wed to Lloyd O. Williams in Tulsa, OK. They soon moved west toward Oregon to start their life together. They arrived in Oregon in the early 1940’s. Dovie worked for a short time as a head cook for a large logging company in Tygh Valley. She and Lloyd moved from there to Brightwood where they made their permanent home. Dovie worked many long hard years in the shipyards in Portland. She eventually left the shipyards and decided to work closer to home. She became a personal housekeeper for several Brightwood area residents, which included such notable families as the Bowman’s of Welches, who developed what is now known as the Resort at the Mountain Golf Course, and the Koch family who owned the lumber mill in Sandy.
Dovie retired in the late 1970’s to become a full time homemaker and nurserywoman. She and Lloyd spent years operating their Mohe Nursery where they sold gorgeous azaleas and rhododendrons for which people came from miles around to buy again and again. After Lloyd passed away in 1983, Dovie continued to maintain her home and the land always pruning, trimming, raking, piling and burning to keep it looking perfect. She was famous for tending a large garden where she raised lots of fresh vegetables for her family. Dovie always made sure anyone that came to her home was loved and well fed with her down home cooking.
In 2009 illness hindered Dovie from enjoying her active lifestyle and she moved down to Sandy to live at Avamere Assisted Living where she remained until her death.
Dovie is survived by her three daughters; Wilma Jean Flanagin of Gresham, Avis Ballard of Sandy and Mavis Murray of Crooked River; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson in 1982, her son Ray in 1998, brother, Houston and sister Maime.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Mt. Hood Hospice or Adventist Hospice.
