Sandy resident, Virginia Turley, died at her home at Cascadia Village in Sandy on April 17, 2020. She was 90.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sandy. A private burial with Military Honors will follow at Willamette National Cemetery.
She was born Elsie Virginia Rink in Millersburg, Indiana, to Fred and Florence (Rockenbaugh) Rink on January 22, 1920. She was raised in Indiana where she completed high school. Virginia continued her schooling at Ball State University at Muncie, Indiana. After earning her Batchelor’s Degree in education, she returned to her Alma Mater and taught High School English and Home Economics for two years.
In 1944, she joined the US Navy and was in the first class of Waves to earn a Specialist Rating. While serving, Virginia met her future husband, James “Frank” Turley. They were married on June 1, 1946 in San Diego, California. After her discharge as Specialist 2nd Class, they made their home in Cranford, New Jersey where they began their family.
Virginia later earned her elementary certification from Newark State Teachers College and taught 5th grade for 20 years for the Clark County Schools. After retiring in 1982, Frank and Virginia moved to Oregon to make their permanent home in Sandy.
Virginia and Frank traveled extensively, while giving freely of their time to Hospice, delivering Meals on Wheels, Kiwanis and their church. Frank preceded her in death in 2001.
Surviving are her sons, James Turley of Houston, Texas and Richard Turley of Ft. Collins, Colorado; her daughters, Patricia Turley of Estacada and Rita Boyd of Sandy; her brothers, John Rink of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Fred Rink Jr. of Millersburg, Indiana; her sister, Alice Schrock of Mission, Texas; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
