In Loving Memory Of

Fred Walter Punzel

February 10th, 1940 - September 27th, 2020

Obituary

Fred Punzel, longtime Sandy resident, passed away September 27, 2020 at his home.  He was 80 years old.

Fred was born February 10, 1940 in Portland, Oregon to Edgar and Clara Punzel.  Fred is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Earl Strong, his companion Judy Grant, and his brothers Phillip Punzel and Mark Punzel.

Fred graduated from Franklin High School in 1958.  He moved to Sandy in 1963 and was hired by the City of Sandy in 1964 as Chief of Police when he was 24 years old.  Fred served the City for 31 years until his retirement in 1995.  He also served as interim Chief of Police for several months in 2010 when he was 70 years old.  Fred loved doing various outdoor construction projects including building barns, building fences, and maintaining property.  Fred was an avid outdoorsman, never missing a hunting season in 70 years and he took every opportunity to go fishing with his friends.  In recent years, Fred and Judy enjoyed many extended trips in their motorhome.

Fred will be dearly missed by family, friends, and colleagues.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Grieved to learn of Fred's passing. I have fond memories of him, he was a dear friend since childhood. My mother (Martha Sumpter - Whitehead) and his mother (Clara) were close friends since childhood as well. Blessings to his family. Matha Maxwell (Sumpter)
Phil & Mark - so sorry to hear of your loss. I remember Fred from our youth and always was in awe! Doris
Fred was a great boss and a dear friend. He was such a character - a one of a kind for sure with lots of great stories to tell. Fred was the epitome of a caring community member - he did much to make Sandy a better place for many. I enjoyed visits with Fred, which always included a cup of coffee, and will miss him. Diane Reed
Fred will be missed by many. He was a true friend and did so much for the people and the city of Sandy. Barbara Church
Diane, am so sorry for your loss. Your dad was a special man and Jim and I have fond memories. Kay Kirby Redmon
We used to laugh and say if other people our age only knew what they were missing. We had it all for four short years, but they were fun ones, full of love and and adventures never to be forgotten. judy
