Sandy resident Frederick “Fred” Roy Thomas, 62, died Thursday, April 29, 2010.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8th, at Meinig Park in Sandy.
Fred was born May 23, 1947, in Hennepin County, Minnesota, to Frederick and Esther Thomas. As a young child, Fred lived in Germany while his father was stationed there as a sergeant in the Army. Fred grew up in Southern California and graduated with honors from San Pedro High School. He then received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.
After school, Fred worked as a chemist for the Department of Air Quality for Los Angeles County. He later worked at northwest Testing Laboratories in Portland. He married and then later divorced.
As a youth, Fred enjoyed surfing, songwriting, and poetry, but music was his true love. Fred was an award-winning banjo player, but could play almost any instrument placed in front of him.
Survivors include his children, Ramona Krueger of Portland; Christian Thomas of Hillsboro; Jami Thomas of Walla Walla, WA; Michael Bayse of Walla Walla, WA and eight grandchildren.
Memorial donations or contributions can go to whatever “makes the music grow.”
