Sandy resident Gar Riggs died in Corbett on August 25, 2012 at the age of 60. He died what he loved doing most; riding his motorcycle on a beautiful day with a wonderful friend.
At his request no services were held.
Gar was born to John Louis and Jean Vella (Clifford) Riggs Sr. December 5, 1951 in Portland. He graduated from Hillsboro Union High School in 1969 and joined the Army in 1970. He was stationed in South Korea.
After his time in the military he developed a love for sailing and spent time giving tours off the coast of Florida. Eventually he moved back to Oregon and lived on the Columbia River in a houseboat.
In 1983 Gar married Johnna Schreiber and they had one son, Ted. Gar worked most of his life as a cabinetmaker and journeyman carpenter. In the early 90’s he settled on a wooded lot across from Roslyn Lake in Sandy where he enjoyed the beautiful lush landscape and peaceful surroundings.
As long as anyone can remember Gar loved riding motorcycles. Most of his family had their first ride behind him on his motorcycle which was a thrilling experience and treasured memory. His sense of humor and playfulness, along with his heart of gold and deep compassion followed him throughout his life. For those who knew Gar, the memories will live in our hearts forever.
He is survived by his son Ted of Boring; brothers, John, Clifford, Jim, and Les Riggs; sisters, Anna and Pat and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
