Sandy resident, Ima Rowland, died on June 1st, 2019 at her home. She was 95.
Ima Lazinka Southern was born on February 19, 1924, in Haleyville, Alabama to Harl and Mary (Hughes) Southern. Ima was one of 6 children. She had 2 sisters, Blanche and Hazel and 3 brothers, Winfred, Crant and Charles Wayne. Ima was raised and received her schooling in Haleyville and shortly after graduating from high school, she moved to Los Angeles, California with her sister, Blanche. While in California, she met her future husband Jack who was serving in the Air Force.
Ima and Jack were married in Boise, Idaho where Jack was stationed at the time. The first of their children, Bruce was born in Tacoma, Washington at McChord Air Force base. Jack and his family later returned to California where Jack was stationed and their second child, Jackie was born in San Bernadino. Ima and Jack lived in various area of the United States, Washington, Arizona, Georgia and settled in Sandy in 1957.
Ima and Jack attended Sandy Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed the women’s bible-study groups and women’s quilt making group. She was also on the board of the Community Action Center in the past years and volunteered with various businesses. Jack and Ima also had many foster children living with them over the years and several foreign exchange students whom they had continued to stay in touch with. She cherished her family as they did her and she will be greatly missed.
Ima is survived by her son, Bruce, daughter, Jackie, grandchildren, Shannon, Andrea, Shari, Gabe, and Julia, her great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Christian, Courtney, Carson, Clara, Taylor, Haley, Carter, Caleb, Jack, Zane, Gemma and her brother Crant. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack in 2015, her granddaughter, Carrie in 2002 and her siblings.
