Longtime Sandy resident, Iris Shaw died at her home on Thursday, December 11, 2008 after a long battle with cancer. She was 85.
A funeral service will be held in the chapel of Sandy Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. A private burial will follow at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
She was born, Iris Mable Roberts to Ira and Alice (Westfall) Roberts on July 31, 1923 in Klamath Falls. The family moved to Grants Pass where she was raised and received her schooling. After graduating from high school, she furthered her education and attended beauty school and began her career as a hairdresser.
On February 28, 1949, Iris was united in marriage to Charles Shaw in Grants Pass. They remained in Grants Pass where she continued her career and later began their family. After their first child was born, Iris took a leave from her career in order to stay home to raise their two children and worked part time from her home making wedding cakes.
In 1960, the family moved to Sandy and made their permanent home. In 1968, Iris returned to work and was employed at Mt. Hood Community College as a Librarian until retiring in 1985.
Mrs. Shaw was past president of the Gresham Widows of the Elks, enjoyed playing bingo and gambling on the one cent and nickel machines, taking trips to Spirit Mountain, traveling and camping with friends, bowling and was an avid reader, especially enjoying mysteries. In her earlier years, she crocheted and knitted.
Surviving is her daughter, Marianne Margeta of Portland; her son, David Shaw of Clackamas; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Charles in 1973.
