Joan Audrey Hanley, age 90, passed away peacefully February 16, 2019 at her home, surrounded by her family, and with a sincere faith in the salvation of Jesus Christ. She was born on June 29, 1928 in Menomonie, Wisconsin in her grandmother’s home, and in the same bed that her own mother was born in. Audrey loved people. She nurtured and enjoyed friendships that lasted over 70 years. She was an excellent cook and was always ready to share meals with those who needed one. She lived her life filled with unconditional love for those around her, and her life was a living example of Ephesians 4:32 -Be kind to one another, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
The Peake family moved to Chicago, Illinois when the girls were small and she had many stories of skating on the pond in Humboldt Park, attending the local Adventist school, living near Wrigley Field, and playing in the fountain at Grant Park. When the girls were entering their teenage years, the family moved to Bismarck, North Dakota. During their time in North Dakota, Audrey remembered the hot summers and indicated she could actually hear the corn growing. Eventually, the family made its way to Portland, Oregon where Audrey attended Portland Union Academy and graduated from high school in 1948. She married Norman Hanley between her junior and senior year of high school.
Audrey worked as a waitress at Yaw’s topnotch restaurant as a cookie packer, for a hospital laundry service, and as a secretary for Servall Accounting Services. She also worked as a dental receptionist for Norman during most of his dental career and as a church secretary later in life. Audrey was an active volunteer at Hoodview Junior Academy and Portland Adventist Academy during her daughters school age years. She also volunteered at Portland Adventist Community Services and was a charter member of the Pleasant Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Audrey was the second born of Bruce and Agnes Peake’s 5 daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Arline Canty and Laurine Farthing, and is survived by her younger sisters; Patricia Clark and Nancy Echelbarger, Daughters; Sharon Aaltonen, Karla Bale(Gary) and Linda Johnson(Kevin); 6 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
