In Loving Memory Of

Joe Torbjorn Lindsoe

July 29th, 1929 - April 11th, 2023

Obituary

Rev. Dr. Joe Torbjorn Lindsoe was born July 29, 1929, to Norwegian parents Holder and Gunvald Lindsoe, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. At the age of two, Joe traveled with his mother back to Norway where he enjoyed urban life in Oslo and rural life in Dovre.

In 1939, with war threatening Europe, Joe returned to his father in Arlington, Virginia. He attended Washington-Lee High School; then he received his B.A. degree in Psychology from Lynchburg College. In 1952 he married Dulcie Rosetta Simpson and they moved to Lexington, Kentucky. He received his Bachelor of Divinity and Masters in Christian Education from Lexington Theological Seminary. Later, in 1977, he received a Doctor of Ministry degree from the same institution.

In 1971, after being widowed, Joe and Betty Keister Roseberry were married. They had nearly 50 years together doing Christian work.  Joe served in churches in Richmond, Arlington and Rocky Mountain, Virginia. Then in Adelaide, Australia, where they served in one year minister exchange program.  Throughout his “retirement” years, Joe served many churches as an interim (fill-in) minister.

Joe was active in many civic organizations such as Lions Club, Jaycees, Franklin County Mental Health and Franklin County Social Services. As an avid sports participant he was instrumental in organizing the Franklin County Recreation Department. For 55 years, Joe was a competitive tennis player, switching to pickleball after the age of 80. At age 90, he was the oldest competitor in the 2019 State Games of America!

Joe always kept in touch with his relatives in Norway, returning first at age 19 and numerous times throughout his life. Considering himself an only child, he was surprised to learn via a telephone call from Norway in 2000, that he had a half-sister. (Sharing the same mother). That began a loving relationship with Mari Bjerland and her large family. (A book entitled “Found But Not Lost” by Gene Herrick documents this amazing story.)

Joe is survived by his daughter Dulcie Lindsoe-Johansen (Mark), stepdaughter Resa Roseberry Payne (Gary), stepson Greg Roseberry (Vickie), half-sister Mari Bjerland, and sister-in-law Anne Burnett; Grandchildren Elizabeth Stinnett (Brandon), Sharon Roseberry, Benjamin T. Johansen; Great-grandchildren Brooklyn Stinnett.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dulcie Rosetta Simpson Lindsoe, son Eric Joe Lindsoe and wife Betty Keister Lindsoe.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Timberlake Christian Church, Lynchburg, Virginia on May 6, 2023, at 2:00 p.m.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Lynchburg Daily Bread, 721 Clay Street, Lynchburg, Va. 24504.

I remember with great fondness our relationship with Joe and Betty Lindsoe. My husband, Rev. Bill Murdock, served the Ft. Lewis Christian Church while Joe was in Rocky Mount. We enjoyed several great gatherings through the years. Bill dies in 2019. Jennie Sue Murdock
On behalf of members of Blafjell Lodge of the Sons of Norway, of which Joe was a beloved active member for many years and President Emeritus, we extend our most sincere sympathy; we have many happy memories of the time that Joe was with us.

I am so saddened to hear of "Papa Joe's" passing. There are not enough words to describe this man, he was an exception to the rule. I worked for Joe opening the first Dairy Queen in Rocky Mount and also did secretarial work for the church when he didn't have a secretary. Even though I wasn't a member of his church, he married me and Earl there almost 53 years ago; and several more of my brothers and sisters. I hope Dulcie Jo and all of his family know what an impact he had on the community and all the teenagers. I don't think as kids and teenagers we thought of him as a minister; only as our friend Joe. May you rest in peace in your heavenly home and never loose that beautiful smile and twinkle in your eye. Godspeed....... Betty Ingram Young
I’ve never met a kinder, gentler person than Mr. Lindsoe. He was one of my first employers and in many ways, I never had a better one. I’m sure that he’s sitting at the right hand of God now; with his wives and his son. May he rest in peace. Gary Furrow

I am truly saddened to hear of the passing of Rev. Dr Joe Lindsoe. He and his family played an integral role in the lives of so many. I will always carry fond memories of him, and his late wife Betty and the roles they both played in my young life in Rocky Mount Christian Church.
Kind regards,
Carson

Dr. Lindsoe was the pastor at our church when I was a child and which I still attend. He was a good man and impacted many people in a positive way. May he bask in God's glory as with his work here on earth has most certainly has earned it. RIP Mark Betterton
Dulcie Jo. I'm so sorry to hear about Joe. He was a very special man with a ready smile. I'm praying for you and your family as you grieve. I will see you in Lynchburg next month. Rosie Hampton
