John Arthur McDougall passed away at his home on June 25, 2011 after a very short battle with cancer. He was 63 years old.
He was born to Joseph William and Velora Darlene McDougall in Berkley, CA on November 21, 1947. His family moved to White Earth, MN, where they lived on the Chippewa Indian Reservation. At age 7 they moved to Lyons, OR, where John graduated from Stayton High School. He played football and baseball, a 4 year letterman in both, boxed Golden Gloves, and loved to hunt and fish.
John served in the Army where he was a sharp shooter and a boxer, never losing a match. After the service he started a long career in the telephone business. His job with Contel brought him to the mountain in 1979 where he met the love of his life, Kathleen McDougall. McDougall you say? No relation to each other—until they married in 1988. Their son, Travis was born in 1991.
John loved boating with his family and friends, loved his boys, Jeff and Travis and grandkids Cheyenne and Justin.
John will be especially remembered as being an excellent judge of character and was right up front with his opinions. He also loved to grill on his pellet barbecue, preparing many feasts for family and friends.
John was preceded in death by his father, Joseph William McDougall. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen of 23 years; son Travis, of Welches, son Jeff and daughter-in-law Brenda and grandchildren Cheyenne and Justin, of Salem; sister Pat (Ben) Hubbard of LaFayette; brother Don (Teresa) of Stayton; sister Sandy (Bruce) Teeters of Sublimity; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. John has a large extended family and many friends who will all miss him dearly.
He will be laid to rest at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland on June 30 at 12:00 noon. A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 pm at the home of Jim and Margaret Jarvis, 19595 E. Aschoff Road, Zig Zag, OR 97049.
