Lifetime Sandy area resident, John Christensen died at his home on Tuesday, May 26, 2009. He was 84.
A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel of Sandy Funeral Home on Monday, June 1, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Private burial will follow at Firhill Memorial Cemetery.
John David Christensen was born on June 16, 1924 in Portland to Frank and Grace (Wolf) Christensen. John was raised and received his schooling in Sandy. Shortly after graduating from Sandy High School, he worked for his father, driving school bus and transporting workers to and from the shipyards during WW II.
On August 19, 1945 John was married to Lucille Sladky. They made their home in Sandy where they began their family and John was a private contractor with the U.S. Postal Service. In the late 1950’s, John worked as a long haul truck driver until he went to work for United Grocers doing local grocery delivery until retiring in 1986, That same year, they moved to Gresham where they enjoyed retirement together, traveling and spending time with their grandchildren.
On April 25, 1991, Lucille preceded him in death. John remained in Gresham until 1994 when he was married to Trudy Meier on September 9th and they made their home in Boring.
John was a member of Good Shepherd Community Church, the United Grocers Retired Truck Drivers and was a past member of the Sand J.C.’s. John enjoyed working in his shop, “tinkering”, traveling and spending the winters in Scottsdale, Arizona.
John was a loving father, husband, grandfather and great grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Surviving is his wife Trudy; his sons, John and Steve Christensen both of Sandy; his sister, Phyllis Calhoon of Sandy; his step sons, Ken Meier of Boring and Curt Meier of Pearland, Texas; his step daughters, Janet Schilling of Brownsville, Oregon and Colleen Taylor of Sandy; 19 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
The family suggest memorial contributions be made to Legacy Hospice.
