John Thomas Sauer Sr.

September 26th, 1928 - February 14th, 2019

Obituary

John Thomas Sauer, 90, passed away on February 14th, 2019. He was born on Sep. 26th, 1928, in Elwood, IN.  He was one of 5 children born to Theodore Joseph and Margaret Martha Sauer. He proudly served in the US Navy.  He spent his early vocation as a barber for 20 years. He married, Beverly Ann Staugler, of Fort Recovery, OH, and had seven children together. They moved to Gresham, OR in 1967. Both he and Beverly retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He always had fascinating stories about growing up and working on the railroad at 13yrs old, crossing the country by hopping freight trains, and traveling the world as a seaman. He had a great sense of humor and was a bountiful source of jokes and old sayings that would make anyone laugh. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by former wife Beverly, son Ted, and daughter Tina Bredenkamp. He is survived by sons Tom Jr., Tim, and Todd, and daughters Terri Cook and Toni Morse. He also is survived by 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Although we didn't get to see Uncle Tom nearly enough, our visits with him were always full of wild stories and his fabulous contagious laugh! I can still hear it today. Our prayers and sympathy to all of you. He was so loved by all of us. Peg Morandini
john you were a great friend of 50 years I will miss tou gibby
Our heartfelt condolences to all the family at the passing of our Uncle Tom. He now joins his brothers and sisters in his heavenly home, no doubt having saved some of his best stories for the group up there. My mother Susanne was his baby sister, and we would all look forward to visiting Fort Recovery, hoping we would see Uncle Tom. His laughter would fill the whole house and his stories would have everyone in stitches. It wasn’t just “what” he said, but the priceless way he delivered it! There may have been a time or two when he embellished the wording of a joke. Nannie would act shocked and say "Oh, Tom!" Then she couldn't contain her laughter, either. 😊 Everyone should find great strength and reassurance in Tom’s outlook on life. If anyone could make "lemonade out of lemons," it would be Tom. Humor, the ability to laugh at oneself, and share a positive thought with those around him, are all hallmarks of the great guy he continues to be. You are always with us. Fair winds and following seas! Love, John Ohm and family John Ohm and Family
Dear Tom, Tim, Todd, Terri and Toni: My deepest condolences on the loss of your Dad. He was one of the sweetest, funniest, kindest, gentlest people I have ever known. I was so lucky to be able to call him my Uncle. He will be missed very much. Love, Betsy Betsy Miller
