Longtime Boring resident Julian “Sandy” George Shokey died July 18, 2012 at Mt Hood Medical Center. He was 74.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24. Viewing will begin prior to the service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 2 p.m.
Sandy was born February 11, 1938 in Bay Shore, New York to Julius George and Wilhelmina (Brandes) Shokey. He grew up on Long Island graduating from high school there in 1955. After graduation he attended New York State Maritime College graduating from there in 1959 with a degree in Marine Engineering.
After college and during his time in the Naval Reserve he was stationed in Hawaii where he met his future wife, a beautiful Oregon farm girl, Betty Leber. They were married September 30, 1961 in Gresham, OR. The couple moved back to New York and started their family, having two daughters. Sandy completed his Master’s Degree in Engineering Management at Long Island University February 1969.
In 1971 the family moved to Oregon where they settled in Boring. Sandy began his career at Freightliner working there until his retirement in 1993. In retirement he ran a small Christmas tree farm at his home.
Sandy enjoyed both vegetable and flower gardening. He was an excellent woodworker, designing and building fine furniture for his family. He also loved playing cards with family and friends.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church since 1971 and an active volunteer there over the years contributing through his handyman skills and lawn care expertise.
Survivors include Sandy’s daughters; Janna Kampen of Anchorage, AK and Denise Cummins of Lebanon; sister, Gloria Burns of Rockwood, ME; brother, Arthur Shokey of Boring and 3 grandchildren, Katie Kampen, Megan and Tonn Cummins. He was preceded in death by Betty in 2009.
