Longtime Sandy resident Mike Matheny,68, passed away with family by his side on Tuesday April 5, 2016.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Sandy Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow at Willamette National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 12 at Sandy Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m.
Michael Leonard Matheny was born May 14, 1947 in Hebron, Nebraska to Elizabeth E. (Sponsler) and Wilson O. Matheny. When he was very young the family moved to Oregon settling in Sandy. Mike received his education in the Sandy Schools graduating from Sandy High in 1966. He joined the Navy that year where he served honorably and was discharged in 1970.
After his military service Mike began his career at Reynolds Aluminum where he worked for 23 years. He then went on to work for Tri-Met in Portland for 14 more years before his health began to decline.
Mike enjoyed going to the casinos every now and then; especially in Reno. His favorite activities, though, were fishing and hunting. He enjoyed several trips to Alaska which he would often reminisce about with family and friends.
Survivors include, his mother, Elizabeth Matheny of Sandy; brother, Patrick Matheny of Sandy; sister, Nancy Worlein and brother-in-law Doug Worlein of Scappoose; nephew, Travis Matheny and great nephew Kevin Matheny both of Sandy.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made in Michael’s name to the American Cancer Society.
