Ned Edmond Dyal, 90, departed this earth on February 25th and entered his Heavenly home. He was born on December 11, 1927 in Dysart, Iowa, the 7th of 10 children to Artemus Ward & Frona Overton Dyal.
While Ned was young, the family moved to Grants Pass, OR where they opened a bakery. After several years, the family moved to Sandy, Oregon and where they began farming and logging.
Ned attended Sandy Ridge and Sandy Union High School graduating in 1946. He was an accomplished wrestler and at one time wrestled for the opportunity to go to the Olympics.
In Feb 1953, he enlisted in the Army and attained the rank of Sergeant before being Honorably Discharged in Jan 1955. In September of that year, Ned met Shirley Ann Koppenhafer while she was visiting his younger sister, Mildred. Shirley was home on leave from the Army. After a one-week courtship, the two were married on September 18, 1955 at Sandy Baptist Chapel. At the time of his death, they had been married 62 years.
They moved to Ft. Benning, GA so that Shirley could complete her military assignment. After her discharge from the Army, they lived a short time in Sandy before moving to Springfield, OR where Ned would attend the University of Oregon. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting in 1961. While living in Springfield, Shirley’s niece and nephew, Rose Marie and Emmett Gibson, came to live with them. It was in Springfield that Shirley gave birth to the couple’s two children, Richard and Barbara. After graduation, Ned took a position with a tax firm in Astoria while he prepared for the CPA exam. Ned and Shirley returned to the Sandy area in 1963 where Ned opened a private CPA office, which he operated until his retirement in the mid-eighties.
He helped his wife, Shirley open an antique shop called Collector’s Cottage in 1977. Collecting antiques was a passion that both he and Shirley shared. They enjoyed operating the shop together for many years.
Ned was involved in the Sandy community almost his entire life. He was a past President of both Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Sandy Garden Club and had been honored for his work at beautifying the City of Sandy.
He was also a longtime member of the Christian Business Men’s Committee and Gideons International. He was a member of Sandy Baptist Chapel for many years before changing to Gresham First Baptist Church where he attended for over 40 years. He taught Adult Sunday School and loved to get into theological discussions.
Ned was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He enjoyed camping and building things. He built the family home and enjoyed landscaping and working in the yard.
Whenever his kids had sporting events or school activities, you would find him there to support them and cheer them on. He rarely missed a game or event.
Ned is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley Dyal and his kids Richard Dyal (Janelle) of Sandy and his daughter Barbara Davenport (Joe) of Vancouver, WA. He has five grandkids, Matthew Dyal (Brooke), Tressa Nicholls (Jason), Winston Davenport (Abbey), and Spencer Davenport. Laura Dyal Silva preceded him in death. He also has seven Great-Grandchildren, Logan, Carson, Brandon, Jordan, Olivia, Benjamin and Zachary. He has one remaining sibling John Dyal (Beverly) Olympia, WA
In lieu of flowers, Ned would have wanted any contributions to be given to Gideons International.
