Former Sandy resident, Mac McManus died at Portland Adventist Medical Center on Saturday, November 21, 2009. He was 82.
A Funeral Service will be held at Sandy Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Firhill Memorial Cemetery.
Dad was born on December 4, 1926 in Olathe, Colorado to Emmett and Mabel McManus. He began his elementary education in Colorado and at the age of 14, the family moved to Oregon. They made their home in Sandy where he attended Sandy High School. At the age of 18, dad entered the U.S. Navy on September 14, 1944. He served on the USS Farragut during WW II until the ship struck a mine in the Philippines. Dad was honorably discharged on June 26, 1946 and returned to Sandy and married Anne Steenson on June 26, 1947. During his working career, he was employed in the shipyards before the war. After his discharge, he worked in the logging industry and later for Reynolds Aluminum and later became a truck driver until the age of 77 when he fully retired.
Dad loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed hunting, golfing and attending his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events. He was a number one fan of the Oregon State Beaver Football team and was an avid dancer.
Surviving are his children, Kenn McManus and his wife JoAnne of Troutdale, Darla and her husband Gay Melvin of Dufur, Diane and her husband Bob Blake of Canyon City, Oregon and Greg and Peggy McManus of Sandy; his sister Maxine and her husband Hubert Johnson of Gresham; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
We love you dad, grandpa and great grandpa “Mac” and will miss you greatly.
