Former Sandy resident, Norman Gynther, died in a Portland residential care center in Portland on September 23, 2009. He was 82.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday September 30, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sandy.
Norman Wayne Gynther was born to William C. and Anne (Fiske) Gynther in Portland, Oregon on March 13, 1927. He was raised in Portland where he graduated from Jefferson High School in 1945. Immediately after high school Norman entered the US Navy to serve at the end of WW II.
After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Portland where he worked in shipping and receiving, in a sheet metal shop and in his parent’s restaurant prior to making his career as a salesman and manager for the Smithwick Block Company. He retired in 1989, after being with the company for 25 years.
On June 23, 1951, he married Elaine Lehmer in Portland. They lived in Portland where they began their family. In 1965, they moved to Sandy to make their home and finish raising their family. In 1989, Norman moved to Portland.
He enjoyed singing, reading, doing puzzles and traveling. He was involved in the church choir.
Surviving are his sons, J Stuart Gynther of Oxnard, California and Michael Gynther of Sandy; daughter, Marcia Reiter of Worden, Montana; his former wife, Elaine Gynther of Sandy; 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
