In Loving Memory Of

Polly "PoHo" Ann Hobbs

April 21st, 1929 - July 27th, 2020

Obituary

Gresham resident, Polly Ann Hobbs, passed away Monday evening, July 27th, 2020. She was 91.

Polly Hobbs, also known as PoHo, was a confident accomplished artist, educator, writer, illustrator, caregiver and a mother figure and friend to many.

She started her art career her senior year of high school when she submitted the winning design for the Pasadena City float for the 1946 Pasadena Rose Parade in Los Angeles, California. She married Bill Hobbs on August 15, 1948. In the 1950’s she taught private art lessons while raising her four children.

In 1960 she and her family moved from Los Angeles to Portland, Oregon where she taught for a private college and continued working as a freelance illustrator. In 1970, after finishing her degrees at Portland State University, she began teaching Art and Drama at Rowe Middle School in Clackamas, Oregon until 1974 when she settled down at Barlow High School in Gresham teaching art and drama. During this time, she continued illustrating children’s books, cookbooks and commercial art illustrating fruit and vegetable labels for local processors. She was also chosen to illustrate the Portland Symphony Calendar 2 years in a row and from that exposure her demand as an artist and illustrator quickly grew.

She retired from Barlow High School in 1992 and started teaching water color painting for Mt. Hood College and several private galleries. All the while continuing to illustrate books, calendars and any other jobs that came her way. She was hired to design Nutcrackers that were manufactured in Germany then imported and distributed in America. In 1990 she started writing and illustrating her own how-to books, “Bet-chu-can-do-it Snowflakes”. All five volumes were written, designed, printed and distributed by her with all proceeds going to women and children’s homeless shelters in the Portland Metro area. She held many one-woman shows with her watercolors of flowers, portraits and landscapes. She specialized in teaching her own method of painting clear glass and had a large following of students.

Polly is survived by four children; daughters Cindy (Jim) Stewart, Michal (Hobbs-Bodey) Grey and sons Bill (Terri) Hobbs and Matthew Hobbs along with eleven Grandchildren, thirteen Great-Grandchildren and three Great-Great-Grandchildren. She is proceeded in death by her husband, Bill Hobbs, sister Peggy Casey and brother Dick Blaydes.

Polly was such an inspiration. Im so thankful I took her class at SBHS. 1980. I loved art but felt I needed to stick with academics. She was such an inspiration, now 40 yrs later even though I am a nurse I also am an artist. 25 yrs after graduation I had the joy of taking a watercolor class for Polly with my husband as an adventure in creative date night. I treasure the paintings done by my husband and the memories of her talent and easy going encouragement to make art. .What an honor to know her and be able to say she touched my life. Blessings to family and friends as they miss her everyday. REBEKAH J HARRY

I first met the wonderful Polly Hobbs in the fall of 1967! I was a freshman in college and Polly
was going back to school. We took a year-long Botany course on Saturdays from 7:00 am-noon!
Later, I started her watercolor class at MHCC, Maywood Park!
Polly was always cheerful and very kind. Everyone adored her, and what talent!!!
Also, at one time I had her grandson Aaron as a student! In later years, he played a guitar
in the back of her art class as we painted!

Worked with Polly at Barlow and took art classes from her at MHCC, which stimulated our interesting watercolor painting. Polly could always bring out the best in people, especially problem students at Barlow. Will always remember her words of encouragement and empathy. Ken and Patsy Crouser

Mrs. Hobbs was one of my favorite teachers. Reading about her now makes me smile, she touched so many peoples lives. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. Cindy
Mrs. Hobbs was a great teacher. Always enjoyed her class. I always have one memory of her class. My Dad was very artistic and I thought I was until she dashed my dreams on one assignment. We had to draw two creatures merged together, so i chose a butterfly body and a baboon head. I thought it looked pretty cool and was proud to turn in my work. Mrs. Hobbs thought it wasn't feasible so my artistic dreams were crushed. Still loved her class tho and enjoyed seeing her everyday. Great lady!! Jeff Fitzpatrick
We had such a good time in her MHCC painting class and when we both worked at Barlow. Miss her. Susan Lorain

To the family, my heartfelt condolences for your loss. Please find comfort in the knowledge that God promises to end all suffering. Before long, God will wipe out every tear from our eyes, and “death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things (will) have passed away.”(Rev. 21:3,4). May this promise from God give you comfort now and a real hope for the future. My deepest sympathy. Mary
