Longtime Sandy resident, Rich Spitzengel died on Monday, April 8, 2013. He was 85.
A Funeral Service will be held at Sandy Funeral Home on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. A Committal Service will follow at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland at 12:30.
Richard Paul Spitzengel was born on March 26, 1928 in Kansas City, Kansas to Albert and Hazel (Bernard) Spitzengel. He received his elementary schooling and began his high school education in Kansas. In 1945, his family moved to Oregon and made their home in Portland. Shortly after graduating from Lincoln High School, he entered the U.S. Air Force on July 12, 1950 and was honorably discharged on August 21, 1953. He returned to Oregon, making his home in Troutdale he worked various jobs until he re-enlisted in the Military. On September 19, 1959, he entered the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged on September 18, 1961 and returned to Troutdale.
Rich began his lifelong career with U.S. Postal Service in Portland in 1961. On November 6, 1965 he was united in marriage to Kit Weygandt. They made their home in Gresham and began their family and raised their 3 boys. In the late 1980’s, Rich retired and the family moved to Sandy and made their permanent home.
Rich enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with his friends at the Sandy V.F.W. Hall where he was a lifetime member. Rich will be greatly missed by his adoring family and many friends.
Surviving is his wife Kit; his sons, Rob Spitzengel of Gresham and Ryan Spitzengel of Sandy and 8 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son Richard Jr. and his twin brother, Eugene.
