Rita Jeanette Hewitt passed away on January 1, 2020 in Providence Hospital from complications suffered during surgery to repair a hip fracture. Rita was born in Sandy on July 14, 1935 to Charles and Viola Updegrave. She attended one-room Dover Grade School and graduated from Sandy High in 1953. She married Bob Hewitt in December of that year and they marked 66 years of marriage on the 27th. They had two children, Todd in 1959 and LeAnn in 1961.
Rita was a homemaker and excelled at mothering and decorating. She lived in seven different states but returned to Oregon in 1991 when Bob retired. Together they built a home on property adjoining Oxbow Park and lived there for 25 years before moving into Bonaventure of Gresham in 2017. Rita loved animals, especially her cats. The Oxbow area offered her an endless parade of deer, bear, raccoons, opossums, birds, squirrels, fox, mink, skunks and other wildlife.
Rita was known for her kindness, devotion to family and her beautiful smile. Over the last few years she developed Alzheimer’s and was in the latter stages at her passing. Please support Alzheimer’s research in her memory. There will be no memorial Service.
