Longtime Sandy resident, Robert "Bob" Kallen died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 15, 2009. He was 84.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held at Sandy Funeral Home on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Sandy on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held on Monday, April 27, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland with Military Honors.
Robert Gill Kallen was born on April 3, 1925 in Portland to Leonard and Violet (Gill) Kallen. He was raised and received his elementary and high school education in Portland. Shortly after graduating from Grant High School in 1942, Bob worked in the shipyards until he was commissioned as an Officer with the U.S. Navy on November 3, 1945.
Bob was united in marriage to Virginia Malloy on January 28, 1950. He had a career in the Navy for many years, retiring as a Commander. After his honorable discharge from active duty on June 30, 1959, the family moved to Portland. Bob worked for many years at Portland General Electric until retiring in 1987 as Manager of the Mt Hood District.
Bob was a devout Catholic and former member of the Madeleine Parish in Portland and since 1977 has been an active member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Sandy.
Bob was actively involved in local government and numerous charity organizations. He was past President of the Sandy Chamber, a past member of the City Of Sandy Design Review Board, a member of the Christ Child Society, retired Officers Association and the Association of Retirees from Portland General Electric. Bob loved gardening and working in his yard, keeping up to date on his children and grandchildren's lives and activities, golfing and watching sports.
Surviving are his children, Elizabeth Ann & Ian Van Metre of Ootsa Lake, B.C., Kathleen & David Blythe of Portland, Michael & Aisha Kallen of Houston, Texas, Timothy Kallen of Honolulu, Hawaii, Steven Kallen of Medford, Margaret Kallen & Patrick Rake of Mammoth Lake, California, John & Kelly Kallen of Sandy, Matthew & Kristina Kallen of Portland, Peter Kallen & Jeff Stuhr of Portland and Christopher and Jodi Kallen of Portland; his grandchildren, Sarah, Nicholas & Anna Jordan, Robert & Joseph Blythe, Marta, Madeleine, Klubo, Kokulo, Mulbah, Amina & Anthony Kallen, Justin Kallen, Megan Kallen, Benjamin, Juliette & Nicholas Kallen. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Virginia in 1997.
