Sandy resident, Robert Smith, died at his home on Saturday, November 30, 2013. He was 66.
A funeral mass will be held, 11AM, Thursday, December 5, 2013 at St. Michaels Catholic Church followed by burial with military honors at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery.
Robert Glenn Smith was born September 30, 1947. He was born and raised in San Jose, California by his parents John and Vera (Karnes) Smith. After high school graduation, he entered into the U.S. Army serving as a Helicopter Gunner in the Vietnam War. He was shot down 3 times and was awarded the Purple Heart. Robert was sent back to the States and was honorably discharged. Bob then entered the Army National Guard and retired from there after 27 years of service. While in California, he attended college and received a degree in Criminology. He later received a Master’s Degree. In 1972, Bob went to work for the Multnomah County Sheriff's Department and then transferred to Portland Police Department retiring in 2001. He then began a career with PGE retiring in 2010.
On September 25, 1976 Bob married Janet McCormick in Sandy, Oregon where they made their home and raised their family.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and working on their property. He also enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Smith of Sandy; sons, Jonathon Smith of Tampa Florida, Christopher Smith of Clackamas; father, John Smith of San Jose, California; sisters, Gail Smith of Phoenix, Arizona, Lee Smith of San Jose, California and 5 grandchildren. Bob and Janet were preceded in death by their daughter, Jennifer Bandas in 2011.
