Long time Sandy resident Sherry Lawson passed away Monday August 30th, 2021 with family by her side. She was 84. Sherry’s Funeral will be held on Friday, September 17th, 2021 at 12:30pm at Sandy Funeral Home. There will be a viewing before the service starting at 11:00am. Sherry will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Mickey at Cliffside Cemetery following the service.
Sherry Melba Cain was born to Samuel & Mary Ann Cain in Bottineau, North Dakota on October 5, 1936. She was the youngest of 10 children. The family moved to Sandy, Oregon in 1941 where she started her schooling at Sandy Elementary. She graduated from Sandy High School in 1955 as an honor student. She was very active in class and club activities, and sports throughout her high school years. She continued her education at Portland State College receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1960. That fall she started teaching physical education for grades 4-8 at Sandy Ridge.
Sherry married Mickey Lawson on December 26, 1960 at the Presbyterian Church in Sandy. In 1966 she was selected to play tournament volleyball for the Molarettes in Portland. The team ranged in ages from 13 to 40 years old. Sherry had three 8th grade students from Sandy Ridge that she coached and was responsible for. She started teaching 3rd grade at Firwood Elementary in 1968 until 1972, when she stopped teaching to start her family. She returned to Firwood Elementary teaching 2nd grade in 1981 when both of her kids started school. Sherry retired in 1994.
Sherry enjoyed sitting on the side lines and cheering on her two kids, Stewart, and Sydney at all their sporting events. She enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing with her family. She loved holiday gatherings and spending time at home on their farm and reading books with her beloved Mickey. Her grandchildren were the apple of her eye. She touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all her family, friends, and students.
Sherry is survived by her son Stewart Lawson of Sandy; daughter Sydney Cox (Jeff) of Sandy; granddaughter Briana Knox (Brandon) of Rhododendron; granddaughter Melanie Miller (Stephen) of Oregon City; granddaughter Kylee Lawson of Bend; granddaughter Savannah Cox of New Smyrna Beach, Fl; 2 great-grandchildren Brody & Xander and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Samuel & Mary Ann Cain; husband Mickey Lawson; and 9 brothers & sisters.
