Shirley Flath, a Sandy resident for nearly 70 years, died in Sandy on December 13, 2008. She was 79.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, on Thursday, December, 18, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sandy. Burial will follow at Willamette National Cemetery.
She was born Shirley Alice Olson in Wadena, Minnesota to Oscar L. and Freda (Glaser) Olson on November 10, 1929. She began her education in Minnesota and when she was 10, her family came to Oregon to live in Sandy. Shirley finished her elementary education and Immanuel Lutheran Parochial School and graduated from Sandy High School in 1948.
On January 23, 1948 she married Kenneth R. Flath in Sandy. They made their permanent home in Sandy where they raised their family.
Shirley began her working career at the age of 13, at the Sandy Rexall Drug Store. After her children were in school, she returned to work as a clerk. Over the years, she was employed at Zimmerman’s 12 Mile Corner, Piggly Wiggly, Sentry Market, 7-11 and Factory to U. She retired at age 72.
She enjoyed crocheting, tole painting, bowling, fishing, camping, working, and her activities in her church. She also spent many hours serving at both the Sandy Community Action Center and the Sandy Senior Center.
Surviving is her husband, Ken Flath; daughters, Vicki Ulmen and Rebecca Hanning of Sandy; son, Robert Flath of Mt. Vernon, Oregon; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
