Rev. Stuart Duncan Campbell died in Milwaukie on December 22, 2009 at the age of 89.
A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at Emanuel Presbyterian Church in West Linn at 2:00 p.m.
Stuart was born September 23, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the second of 5 children born to Arthur Dougal and Helen Emmaline (Robinson) Campbell.
He served in the United States Coast Guard from Oct. 16 1939 to Oct. 22, 1945 as a Radioman First Class. Stuart attended and then graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA. From there he went on to Princeton Theological Seminary before transferring to San Francisco Theological Seminary, in San Anselmo, CA where he graduated in 1953.
He served in pastorates in Bellflower, CA; a two-point pastorate in Orcutt and Los Alamos, CA; a three-point parish in Los Alamos, Pismo Beach and Nipomo, CA; Taft, CA; Hawthorne, NV. Stuart moved to Oregon in 1982, where he became a Parish Associate at Emanuel Presbyterian Church in West Linn. He also preached at the Chinese Presbyterian Church in Portland on a regular basis.
In between pastorates, he taught 5th graders and special education students in Santa Maria, CA. He also taught in Anaheim, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, and Taft, CA; Hawthorne, NV and Portland, OR.
He married Frances Cambell in 1946. He married Barbara Vanagas in 1965.
He is survived by sons, George of Anaheim, CA, Art of Portland, and Jonathan of Happy Valley; daughters Cecilia Wilcox of Riverside, CA, Julie Reeves of Taft, CA and Sharon Pankratz of Clackamas; two step sons, Tim Vanagas of Portland, and Mike Wilkins of San Clemente, CA; 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Emanuel Presbyterian Church or the Presbytery of the Cascades.
