Verl was born December 6, 1916 in Elmwood, Nebraska to Herman and Helen (Kimbell) Fleischman on the family farm. He was raised on the farm where he learned the value of hard work. He graduated from Elmwood High School in 1936. After graduation he began working as a truck driver for Standard Oil Company. After a time he returned to where his heart was; farming with his dad in Elmwood. It was there that he fine-tuned his farming skills raising corn, wheat and dairy cattle.
In 1939 Verl was married to Katie Dennis in Marysville, Kansas. They lived in Elmwood and started their family. In 1954 they moved out west to Sandy where Verl was a dairyman at what he called the “Udder Place” which is now where Johnson R.V. is located. He and Katie moved to a 700 acre wheat farm in Maupin in 1974 and then back to Sandy when they retired from farming in 1989. Over the years Verl won a variety of agricultural awards including the Oregon Dairy Farm Beautification Program award, the 1964 North Clackamas Outstanding Soil Conservation award and the 1973 Clackamas DHIA Herd award.
Verl enjoyed vegetable gardening and watching football, baseball and basketball games. He also loved spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Katie; son, Alan Fleischman of Sandy; daughters, Patty Whitlock and Julie Snell both of Boring; 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
The family requests contributions be made to the Sandy High School FFA program.
