Victor Benjamin Ulmen was born on March 15, 1923 in Rudyard, Montana to Benjamin W. and Martina C. (Ludwig) Ulmen. He was raised and received his schooling in Rudyard. Shortly after graduating from high school, his father signed for him to join the military and on February 17, 1942 he entered the U. S. Navy, eventually serving in the South Pacific. It was while Vic was on military leave in Rudyard, that he met his future wife Dorothy Eileen Wilson. They were united in marriage on May 5, 1945 in Berkley, CA. Vic was honorably discharged from the Navy on October 7, 1945 after attaining the rank of Pharmacist Mate. He and Dorothy then made their home in Havre, Montana where they began their family and Vic worked at a Gas/Grocery store and also at a local dairy.
In the spring of 1948 the family moved to Sandy where Vic’s father was living. Vic worked various jobs and then at the Meinig General Store. He and his family moved to Milwaukie in 1964 where he was employed at United Grocers. He sold produce there until his retirement on June 24,1985. Vic was not one to sit still so he came to Sandy almost every day and did odd jobs for his daughter and son-in-law at Janz Berryland. In 1999 his beloved wife Dorothy passed away and he returned to Sandy to live and be near his family.
Vic enjoyed woodworking and was known for making tables, rocking horses, desks, cupboards, shelves and afghan racks for his children, grandchildren and friends. Like his father, he was a “fixer”. He liked working on cars, remodeling and whatever else was needed. You name it, and he was able to lend a helping hand.
Surviving are his sons, Don Ulmen of Sandy, Gerald Ulmen of Great Falls, Montana, Larry Ulmen of Portland, and Richard “Fritz” Ulmen of Sandy; his daughters, Marla Jackson and Vicki Picking both of Sandy; his brothers, Clifford Ulmen of Rudyard, Montana and Dennis Ulmen of Havre, Montana; sister Clara Cooke of Big Sandy, Montana; 7 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. He is preceded in death by 2 grandchildren, Courtney and David.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Mt. Hood Hospice or the Sandy Historical Society.
A special thanks goes out to the caregivers and staff at Cascadia Village Retirement Center and Kaiser Hospice. The way they took care of our father will always be cherished.
