Virginia "Ginny" Wilson Spooner passed away peacefully at home on December 5th, 2017 in Sandy, Oregon at the age of 100.
Dan Spooner, who was her loving husband for over 60 years, preceded her in death. Virginia is survived by her son, Dan Spooner and his wife Susan of Streamwood, IL, and daughter Janaan Aden of Sandy, OR, as well as her “adopted son” George Hasely Jr. and his wife Gail of Burbank, CA. She also leaves six grandchildren, all of whom she taught and was a great role model to, and their spouses (Becky and Michael Corwin, Amy and David Ellis, Rachel and Garrett Ianacone, Sarah and Phil Bobnick, Katherine Aden, and Nathan Aden). Virginia has four great grandchildren all of whom she knew and loved (Teddy and Harry Ellis, Isla Corwin, and Piper Bobnick).
Virginia was born on July 29th, 1917 in Pine Lawn, Missouri to William David and Oral Wilson. She was the second of six children, all of whom preceded her in death. After Virginia graduated from High School, she moved to Illinois to live with her Aunt and Uncle in order to care for her sick Aunt. Then, she started working in nursing under the direction of Dr. Greeley at the East Side Hospital in Illinois. In 1939, she married Dan Spooner, who was working at the funeral home in Waterman, IL. In the years that followed, the couple welcomed two children into their family. They also loved and raised George Hasely Jr. as their own for a number of years. Virginia is remembered as a patient, driven, caring, optimistic, generous, creative, resourceful, and loving woman who touched the hearts of everyone who knew her.
Virginia was accomplished at sewing and alterations, baking cakes, and childcare. She continued doing alterations well into her nineties. Virginia loved to bake and decorate elaborate wedding cakes, and also taught her grandchildren how to bake Angel Food Cake. She restored hundreds of dolls, and donated them to bring comfort and joy to children in need. Virginia was a loving individual who cared for a countless number of children, and was passionate about teaching them everything from ABCs to the importance of sharing. Virginia and Dan tirelessly served their community wherever they lived, and in Sandy often volunteered at the Sandy Senior Center. Her friends and family will forever miss her.
A reception at Heidi’s in Gresham at approximately 3:30 PM will follow the graveside service. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Virginia's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Sandy Senior Center at 38348 Pioneer Blvd. Sandy, OR 97055. The family would like to thank Dr. Sunita Deshmukh and Nurse Jackie Bennett for their compassionate care and support.
