Welches resident, William “Bill” Niemeyer died at his home on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 after a fall from his roof.
A funeral service will be held at Sandy Funeral Home on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Scandinavian Cemetery.
William Rand Niemeyer was born on August 13, 1940 in The Dalles to Alphonse and Olive (Planer) Niemeyer. He was raised in Portland where he received his schooling. After graduating from Parkrose High School, Bill furthered his education at Portland Art School.
Bill was united in marriage to Linda Spooner on March 13, 1960. Thirteen days later, he entered the U.S. Air Force on March 29, 1960. After his honorable discharge on December 3, 1963, Bill and his family moved to Welches. Bill then began his life long career in the welding trade, working in the Portland Shipyards on Swan Island until retiring in the 1990’s. Bill and Linda were later divorced but continued an ongoing friendship.
Bill enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially taking time to fish and he was an avid hunter. Bill was an acclaimed artist and did wood carvings and paintings. He also took a great interest in American History.
Surviving are his sons, Dan Niemeyer of St. Helens, Billy Niemeyer of Portland, Mike and Shawn Niemeyer of Sandy; 5 brothers, Russel, Craig, Mark, Wayne and Neil Niemeyer; 3 sisters, Carol Rybloom, Christie Niemeyer and Vicki Swaney; 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
